In 2024, the city of Shusha, carrying the mission of Cultural Capital of the Islamic World, hosted the third meeting of the 12th session of ICESCO's Islamic World Heritage Committee, where various nominations for the Islamic World Heritage List were reviewed, the Ministry of Culture told APA.
Two nominations submitted by the Ministry—Shusha Historical and Architectural Reserve and Aghdam Imarat Complex and Juma Mosque—were discussed for inclusion in the preliminary list of ICESCO's Islamic World Heritage.
During the meeting, Azerbaijan's experience in restoring cultural heritage was highlighted as a unique model for reviving cultural heritage in post-conflict zones globally. The 12th session held in Shusha was particularly significant for Azerbaijan. Following discussions, committee members decided to include the two Azerbaijani nominations—Shusha Historical and Architectural Reserve and Aghdam Imarat Complex and Juma Mosque—in the preliminary list of Islamic World Heritage.
This decision paves the way for the inclusion of these nominations in the Islamic World Heritage List in the coming years. Note that during an extraordinary meeting of the Islamic World Heritage Committee held in Rabat, the capital of the Kingdom of Morocco, in 2019, several sites from Azerbaijan, including Icherisheher (along with the Maiden Tower and the Shirvanshahs' Palace Complex), the historical center of Shaki (including the Khan's Palace), and the rock carvings of Gobustan, were added to ICESCO's Islamic World Heritage List.
