From August 25 to October 5, 2024, with the joint organization of the State Service of Cultural Heritage Conservation, Development and Rehabilitation under the Ministry of Culture and the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology of ANAS, the "Scientific-archaeological excavations and Summer school 4 in Keshikchidag" project is being carried out in the Karvan Valley mounds under the leadership of Shamil Najafov, a leading researcher of the Institute of Archeology and Anthropology of ANAS, PhD in history, associate professor, APA reports.

This year's excavations are being carried out in the mound graves in the Karvan Valley area of the Jeyranchol plain. The area is a flat area with low-height dense vegetation, open sloping hills, and in some places, shallow ravines formed due to the heavy flow of rain and flood waters.

Excavations are being carried out in parallel in 3 mounds. 4 mound monuments were registered in the area at a close distance from each other. One of them was excavated in previous years. Excavation of the remaining 3 mound monuments is being carried out this year.

The upper cover of mound No. 1, was removed, and a burial chamber under the mound was discovered in the center. From the central burial chamber of the mound, which was discovered at a depth of 1.65 m, jawbones and teeth, probably belonging to a bovine animal (bones are assumed to be belonging to a horse), 4 Scythian arrowheads, 1 part of a bracelet with a ribbon cross-section made of bronze, ceramic fragments were found. An additional burial chamber was discovered near the eastern foot of the mound. On the chamber, which was discovered from a depth of 1 m of the mound cover, slabs made of partially carved large rock stones were placed. Parts of a human skeleton were found at a depth of about 1.4 m.

A burial chamber was discovered at a depth of 2.5 m from Mound No. 2, on which large-sized rock stones were cut and partially hewn and smoothed slab stones were arranged. Parts of a human skeleton (mainly femur and arm bones) and parts of pottery were found in the underground burial chamber. Because the stone coating was very thick, the weight of the stones crushed and broke the pottery.

Mound No. 3 is an earthen mound, the height of the upper cover is 1 m above the modern ground surface. In the course of the excavations, after the burial mound cover was removed, a burial chamber was discovered in its center.

The project is being successfully continued and results have already been achieved. Scythian arrowheads, fish ears and paste beads, pottery samples, and cooked animal bones were discovered in the archaeological excavations conducted in the Karvan valley mounds. Among these discoveries, ceramic products made of bronze and estimated to be belonging to the Khojaly-Gadabey culture and A Scythian arrowhead from the B.C. 7th century is of particular interest.

Following that, it is expected that the project will be successfully continued and valuable results will be achieved.
