This June, meetings were organized in the UK with the participation of over 40 countries and organizations to generate ideas and promote the technical delivery of climate and development. I am very glad that today we have the opportunity to discuss those proposals at a political level, Kerry McCarthy, Minister for Climate in the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland said at the Climate and Development Ministerial Conference within the framework of PreCOP, APA reports.
She stated that we all recognize the urgency of taking swift action in the face of the escalating climate emergency: “Developing countries and small island developing states are among the most affected by climate change. They are also among those facing the greatest financial challenges. It is estimated that in this decade, least-developed countries and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) together need between $29 billion to $41 billion annually to adapt to climate change, however, from 2017 to 2021, financial flows for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and SIDS adaptation averaged only $7 billion per year. It is clear that there is a significant gap. At last year's Climate and Development Ministerial Meeting, we heard examples of the nature of the threats faced by least-developed countries and small island developing states, as well as their struggles to access the financing they need, and unfortunately, we encountered more examples of this today.”
