"It is a significant event that the 29th session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP29) is being held in Baku. This is because Azerbaijan has been investing in the 'green energy' sector even before this conference came into focus," Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP29 Nigar Arpadarai said at a panel discussion on “Climate Action and Media," APA's correspondent dispatched to Shusha reports.
The main goal of COP29 is to draw global attention to climate issues and contribute to this matter. Of course, there are ideological differences among the participating countries. Azerbaijan is a country that has been investing in 'green energy' even before the idea of hosting COP29 came up. In this regard, I am confident that many countries will find answers to the questions concerning them about climate change at COP29. I hope that COP29 will achieve its intended goals. COP itself is a very complex but highly relevant event."
She noted that the transition to green technologies requires a significant amount of financial resources.
"Sometimes this amount is measured in trillions of dollars. Personally, for example, before joining the COP process, I did not realize the seriousness of the problem. In the current situation, you understand that the world, while diverse, is also small. For instance, small island states talk about existential threats, which means they are on the brink of disappearing. We are currently seeing a decrease in the Caspian Sea level. Serious environmental problems are also being observed in other countries. Looking at the disasters that occurred this year, it is clear how serious they are. The responsibility for making decisions is great, and if we cannot make them, these disasters will worsen," N. Arpadarai stated.
Note that according to the decision made at the plenary session of COP28 held in Dubai on December 11 last year, COP29 will be organized in Azerbaijan.
