Baku hosts panel discussion within the framework of Pre-COP event

A panel discussion on "Roadmap to Mission 1.5: Enhancing International Cooperation" was held in Baku within the framework of the Preliminary Conference of the Parties on Climate Change of the UN (Pre-Cop29), APA reports.

Mukhtar Babayev, President-Designate president of COP29, spoke about the measures taken in Azerbaijan against the background of the consequences of global climate change.

He said that the governement is creating a number of opportunities to protect farmers from this problem as much as possible.

According to M. Babayev, in this sense, the COP Chairs Troika established with the participation of Azerbaijan, UAE and Brazil is of great importance.

COP28 President-Designate Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technologies of the UAE said that the mentioned format plays an important role in the exchange of ideas between the countries.

Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said that a general global consensus in the tackle against climate change is very important.

According to Amina Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary General, at the Preliminary Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (Pre-COP29), the goals of all parties in the fight against climate change should be aligned with commitment 1.5.

European Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra's speech was dedicated to the importance of accelerating climate change measures.

During her speech, Singapore's Minister of Sustainability and Environment, Grace Fu, said that her country has introduced transitional loans in this area.

Festus Ng’eno, Department Director of Kenya's Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Forestry, said that his country has adopted a climate change strategy covering the years 2023-2030.

Firdaous Oussidhoum, the Special Adviser of the UCLG Secretary General, the world institution for Local and Regional Governments said that it is a good thing that there are social issues on the agenda of COP29, which will be organized in November.

Later, the panel continued with a question-and-answer session.
