The Turkmen side has managed to significantly reduce the volume of a gas-based fire that has been raging in the Karakum Desert of the country for 50 years, APA reports, citing Agence France-Presse.
According to the report, a giant gas flare that has been raging since 1971 and has been emitting a large amount of methane gas into the atmosphere has been tamed three times.
This information was also confirmed by Irina Luryova, director of the Turkmengaz State Energy Company.
According to her, numerous wells have been drilled around the area where the fire broke out to extract methane gas.
It should be noted that the International Energy Agency announced that Turkmenistan is the country that emits the most methane gas into the atmosphere. This state ranks 4th in the world in terms of gas reserves.
