Negotiations between Armenia and the European Union have no connection to the possibility of EU membership candidacy, Peter Stano, the spokesperson for the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated this in an interview with the Armenian bureau of Radio Liberty, APA reports.
He stated that the EU-Armenia partnership agenda was agreed upon with Armenia in February.
"At that time, we agreed to be more ambitious and to renew the existing agreement. We have already started negotiations on the EU-Armenia partnership agenda, and this is a development that will expand EU-Armenia cooperation in all areas of mutual interest as one of the EU's principles of developing relations with partners is to respond to the ambitions of the partner. If we see, as we do with Armenia, that the other side is willing to engage in deeper and more intensive cooperation, we respond to that. So now, we are discussing an agenda to see how far our partners are ready to go and how we can align our goals," Stano said.
The EU official added that these relations have nothing to do with the start of membership negotiations: "This has no connection with the potential membership candidacy process. The negotiations on the EU-Armenia partnership agenda reflect the mutual desire and will of both sides to do more together and are based on existing relations. The current relationship is defined by the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA). These negotiations have nothing to do with potential membership candidacy opportunities; these are two different things. We already have the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement with Armenia, and now we are determining in which areas we can cooperate more closely based on this foundation."
