Azerbaijan, Iraq held political consultations

On April 20, 2025, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Yalchin Rafiyev paid a visit to the Republic of Iraq, APA reports.

Within the framework of the visit, the second round of political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq was held in the city of Baghdad. The political consultations were led by Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev on behalf of Azerbaijan and Deputy Foreign Minister for Bilateral Relations Mohammad Hussein Bahr Al-Ulum on behalf of Iraq.

During the consultations, an extensive exchange of views took place on the current state and future development prospects of bilateral political, economic, trade, energy, humanitarian, and inter-parliamentary relations. Opportunities for expanding mutual cooperation in multilateral formats, particularly within international organizations including the UN, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-Aligned Movement, were discussed. Mutual cooperation within the framework of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP) was also addressed.

The Iraqi side was informed about the post-conflict current situation and the peace process, including the reconstruction and development works carried out in the liberated territories, the demining of our lands, and the return of our citizens to their native lands.

The sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

As part of the visit, Deputy Minister Yalchin Rafiyev met with the Minister of Communications of the Republic of Iraq, Co-chair of the Joint Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical, and Cultural Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Republic of Iraq, Ms. Hiyam Al-Yasiri. During the meeting, the contribution of the Commission to the development of cooperation between the two countries in the fields of economy, trade, and humanitarian affairs was particularly emphasized, and confidence was expressed that the next meeting of the Commission, planned to be held in Baku in the near future, would give an impetus to bilateral relations.

During the meeting between Deputy Minister Yalchin Rafiyev and Deputy Minister of Environment of the Republic of Iraq, Jasim Abdulaziz Hamadi, Azerbaijan's successful COP29 chairmanship and cooperation directions in the field of climate change were discussed.

Yalchin Rafiyev visited Iraq’s “Rewaq Baghdad Center for Public Policy” think tank and met with the center’s director, Abbas Al-Anbari. At the roundtable organized with the participation of the center’s senior officials and researchers, Yalchin Rafiyev provided information about Azerbaijan’s foreign policy, COP29 chairmanship, the country’s position on regional and international developments, and prospects for future cooperation with Iraq, and answered numerous questions from the participants. During the roundtable, detailed information was also provided to the participants about the Azerbaijan-Armenia peace agenda and the reconstruction works carried out in the liberated territories.
