# 21 October 2008 14:38 (UTC +04:00)
The statement says that the European Union notes the efforts made to hold better elections, amendments made to the Electoral Code taking into consideration some of the recommendations of Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and Venice Commission.
“Despite this, European Union notes that the elections do not meet international democratic standards in terms of organizing public debates, conducting elections and counting of votes. European Union persistently calls Azerbaijan’s government agencies to continue making efforts to fulfill the international commitments in the field of democratic pluralism and freedom of media. EU once more confirms its intention to continue supporting the development of Azerbaijan’s democratic institutions within the framework of European Neighborhood Policy,” the statement says.

Along with the EU member states, other candidate countries – Croatia, Macedonia, countries of Stabilization and Association Process, potential candidates Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, members of European Free Exchange Association, members of European Economic Space Iceland and Norway supported the statement.
