Food Quality and Safety Assurance Project introduced in Azerbaijan

Niyazi Safarov, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Economic Development, said the EU-funded €1 million project will be implemented during two years by Dutch-Latvian consortium.
According to him, the project envisions institutional capacity building for the regulation of fishery products and aquaculture, training of the inspection and testing staff, strengthening laboratory services, more effective control over the food quality and safety etc.
He said the improvement of quality and safety of fishery products will help enhance consumer protection and thus increase the competitiveness of the Azerbaijani fishery sector on international markets.
Aslan Jafarov, acting chairman of the State Office for the Control of Consumer Market (SOCCM), spoke about the measures taken to ensure the food safety, increase the competitiveness and quality of foods and train the staff.
Besides, representatives from the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority of the Netherlands, Food and Veterinary Service of Latvia, the EU Office in Baku and other institutions also spoke about the expected benefits of the project.
The EU special envoy in Azerbaijan, Alan Waddams, expressed hope that the project will be successful, by increasing the competitiveness of local products and playing an important role in exporting products to European markets.
