The Defense Ministry told APA that noting the rapid development of cultural and economic relations between Azerbaijan and Japan in recent years, Safar Abiyev stressed that the establishment of bilateral cooperation in military sphere will make great contributions to enhancing relations.

Noting that the first visit of the Japanese Defense Ministry’s delegation to Azerbaijan is of great importance, the minister informed the guests about the ongoing military-political situation in the region and the reasons that led to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He said that Armenia is still continuing its aggressive policy: “Though it is preferred to solve the problem within the OSCE Minsk Group, unfortunately, no concrete results have been produced. According to the minister, one of the factors that causes concern is that the four resolutions of the UN Security Council have not been fulfilled yet. Taking into account the fact that the US Congress has not repealed Section 907, we will see what tensions are going on in the region,” he said.

Defense Minister Safar Abiyev noted that if the situation continues this way, Azerbaijan will be obliged to use the army.

Underlining the significance of Azerbaijan-Japan cooperation, head of the delegation Masahisa Sato said the participation of Azerbaijani armed forces in the peacekeeping missions is of great importance. An agreement was reached at the meeting to work on the draft agreement on bilateral military cooperation.

Azerbaijan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Japan Gursel Ismayilzadeh and Japan’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Azerbaijan Shusuke Watanabe attended the meeting.
