Russian Defense Ministry, working on the modernization of ammunition in the armament has already passed a relevant decision. The decision refers to the negative impact of the bullets on ecology and the health of users, as well as their ineffectiveness against armor. Several cases of lead poisoning have occurred during the shot of lead bullets up to now.
Russian Defense Ministry is ordering new 7BT4 steel bullets to replace the old lead ones. Troops will start to use new bullets in 2014.
The newspaper reports that the annual need of Russian Armed Forces for bullets is 7 billion.
A lead bullet is inserted in the catridges of the machine-gun after 3-4 bullets during trainings and live-fire in Russian Army. These bullets are used to mark targets at night. However, the current bullets of the Russian Army can not pierce modern body armors and protective helmets. They are used only for the correction of fire.
