New Zealand to host pivotal conference for cluster munitions ban
# 26 January 2008 11:38 (UTC +04:00)
The event will be held within the framework of the last preparatory conference of the “Oslo Process”, an international initiative to ban cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm to civilians.
A cluster munitions is an area weapon, originally designed to target moving, dispersed, or concealed enemy forces. It normally comprises a canister containing a number of sub-munitions or bomblets, which are dispersed over an area.
Hafiz Safikhanov, Chief of the Azerbaijan Campaign to Ban Landmines, said their organization has also been invited to the conference.
He added that the parties used cluster munitions in military operations during Nagorno Karabakh War.
Campaigners from all continents will draw chalk silhouette outlines on the ground to draw attention to the human suffering caused by cluster bombs.
The conference will result in a draft treaty text that countries will agree to negotiate in Dublin, Ireland from 19-30 May 2008. /APA/
