He noted that the existence of protracted conflicts in the South Caucasus region creates instable situation in the region and beyond it: â€œBesides, the region is important from the point of view of its neighborhood with Iran. NATO is an important part of European security architecture. We are interested in observance of principle of maintaining peace and stability in OSCE areaâ€.

Elgersma touched on cooperation with Azerbaijan and said that NATO supported reforms directed to ensuring transparency in security issue: â€œThe cooperation in this direction is realized with IPAP. IPAPâ€™s new stage determines basis of our relations with Azerbaijan in the next two years. It includes practical cooperation that we want to develop with Azerbaijanâ€.

He noted that the alliance cooperates with our country in defense reforms and mine clearance spheres. He especially noted Azerbaijanâ€™s contributions made to military cargo traffic to Afghanistan. Azerbaijan was invited to Brussels meeting of ISAF ministers next week.

Elgersma said Azerbaijan would be invited to the NATO Summit in Chicago.
