Meeting with Chernobyl liquidators held at Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations

Baku. Rashad Suleymanov – APA. On the eve of the 25th anniversary of Chernobyl disaster a meeting was held with the liquidators of Chernobyl accident consequences working at the agencies of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

The ministry told APA that Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations Faig Tagizadeh said the disaster at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which resulted in the tragedy of tens of thousands of people, is considered one of the biggest man-made accidents in the history. According to him, over 7000 Azerbaijanis participated in the elimination of the consequences of Chernobyl disaster, later 3000 of them died of radiation exposure. Deputy Minister concerned himself with the problems of Chernobyl liquidators working at various agencies of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

The persons, who directly participated in the elimination of the consequences of Chernobyl disaster, expressed their satisfaction with the attention and care towards them, protection of the handicapped persons by the state, warm attitude of the society towards them, sensitive approach to the solution of their problems. It was noted that attention to the Chernobyl liquidators increased after Heydar Aliyev returned to power in Azerbaijan. Law on giving status to Azerbaijani citizens, who participated in the elimination of consequences of Chernobyl disaster, was signed on December 6, 1993. Since then serious attention has been shown to the Chernobyl liquidators by the state.
