Baku. Rashad Suleymanov – APA. Azerbaijani field engineers have found and neutralized 595 864 ammunitions in the territory of the former Soviet military base Saloglu in Agstafa region of Azerbaijan since January, 2006, operational manager of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Actions (ANAMA) Samir Poladov told APA.
NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency (NAMSA) supports the project, which is carried out to find and neutralize the unexploded ordnances. 250-300 ammunitions of different calibers are neutralized every day, said Poladov.
“We are planning to finish mine-cleaning work in the territory until April or May, 2011. At least 50-60 thousands unexploded ordnances are supposed to remain thereâ€, the manager emphasized.
Poladov said they were planning to clean other dangerous fields following the Saloglu project and ANAMA was negotiating this issue with NAMSA. “Saloglu is a largest conversion project supported by NAMSA and it is unique. NAMSA experts visited Azerbaijan last week highly appreciated the work done by the Azerbaijani field engineers. A number of countries, including Georgia are practically learning the projectâ€.
The ANAMA official said the cleaned territory would be used as a fodder base for a milk processing factory constructed there. The experts have already begun qualitative inspection in the territory.
