Workshop “NATO-Azerbaijan cooperation: civil society views†held in Baku

Baku. Victoria Dementyeva – APA. A workshop entitled “NATO-Azerbaijan cooperation; civil society views†was held at the Romanian embassy in Baku. The workshop was organized by the Azerbaijan-NATO Cooperation Institute, APA reports. Romanian ambassador Nikolae Ureki addressed the event. He said there were certain relations between Azerbaijani officials and NATO and the workshop aimed to make clear the civil society’s position toward this issue.
President of the Azerbaijan-NATO Cooperation Institute Farrukh Mammadov put emphasis on the educational work among the population and civil society about NATO institution and essence, Farrukh Mammadov noted that the institute was closely working with the similar institutes of the United States, Canada, Poland and Hungary. “We are looking forward to hold series of workshops and to carry out some projects, which will promote integration of Azerbaijan into the allianceâ€.
Political scientists Vafa Guluzadeh, Rasim Musabeyov, Ilgar Mammadov and representatives of the diplomatic missions accredited in Azerbaijan addressed the workshop and shared their thoughts about Azerbaijan’s opportunities for NATO membership. Vafa Guluzadeh called Azerbaijan as very important and strategic country for NATO and said deployment of NATO bases in Azerbaijan would be useful for the country’s security. The embassy of Romania in Azerbaijan will carry out the mission of NATO coordinator in Azerbaijan until 2010. Previous coordinator was the embassy of Turkey in Azerbaijan.
