About 30 organizations operating in the Pacific Ocean region issued a joint statement protesting (https://apa.az/storage/news/upload/FR-MEDIA-STATEMENT-Pacific-groups-call-on-the-UN-and-Pacific-Leaders-to-intervene-in-Kanaky-New-Caledonia_1716203470.pdf) the atrocities committed by the French government against civilians in New Caledonia, APA reports.

In the statement, it was emphasized that France is not capable of managing the decolonization process and the intervention of the UN as well as the leaders of the countries of the Pacific Ocean basin was demanded.

They pointed out that the reason of the riots was the French government's insistence on changing electoral legislation by force in New Caledonia:

“In recent months, Kanak leaders have persistently called for the withdrawal of proposed changes to local electoral rolls, warning that such alterations could undermine indigenous rights and disrupt ongoing peaceful dialogues about the territory’s future status.”

The authors of statement, accusing Macron's government of colonialism, emphasized that these changes unilaterally proposed by France will turn the Kanak people into a minority in their own land and may block their way to freedom:

“It’s clear that the French government leaded by Macron is unable to control this decolonization process and is useless. The UN must intervene to restore a more fair and peaceful transition.”
