Iraqi PM, UN chief meet on cooperation, regional stability

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani met here Sunday with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on bilateral cooperation and the latest regional developments, said a statement issued by al-Sudani's media office, APA reports citing Xinhua.

Al-Sudani thanked Guterres for his visit to Iraq and attendance at the 34th Arab League Summit, and praised his "clear and steadfast stance in defending the rights of peoples, particularly the Palestinian cause."

The prime minister affirmed the progress of joint programs and projects between Iraq and the UN, and reiterated Iraq's commitment to "continued collaboration in pursuit of development goals and addressing challenges," read the statement.

For his part, Guterres praised Iraq for hosting the 34th Arab League Summit, and affirmed continued support for Iraq's Arab and regional positions and its role in promoting security and stability, read the statement.

Guterres said he has instructed all major UN agencies to provide full support to the Iraqi government in implementing its development plans and advancing efforts to strengthen Iraq's security and stability, read the statement.

The summit, held in Baghdad on Saturday, was participated by leaders and top diplomats of 22 Arab League member states, as well as representatives from regional and international organizations. A final statement was issued following the summit, which demanded "an immediate halt to the war in Gaza and all hostilities exacerbating civilian suffering."
