Hakan Fidan responded to U.S. President Donald Trump's statement suggesting that the United States may withdraw at some point from ensuring Europe's security, said the Turkish Foreign Minister during a press conference, APA reports.
The minister stated that European countries have already launched programs to reduce their dependence on the U.S. in the defense industry: “Changes have also been made within EU institutions. Türkiye's role in European security is well known. Türkiye' has a well-developed defense industry. Our President has repeatedly stated that we are ready for mutual cooperation. It should create a cooperation system that will include candidate countries such as Turkey, which are not members of the EU, and even non-candidate countries such as Great Britain and Norway. This can especially contribute more in the field of defense industry. NATO still exists, and the U.S. has not announced its withdrawal. I don't think it will do so in the near future either. Türkiye and the United Kingdom are geographically part of Europe. Although the UK and Türkiye are not EU members, geographically they belong to Europe. When you cooperate in the field of security, you are not only supporting each other, but also signaling that you do not pose a threat to one another.”
