China Stretches Medals Lead At Asian Games

Baku-APA. Host-China has continued to dominate the competition at the Asian Games in Guangzhou, picking up 11 gold medals at the continental event that brings together more than 10,000 athletes from 45 countries, APA reports quoting vonews.com website.
Peng Shuai earned the women’s singles gold in tennis Tuesday, beating Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan, 7-5, 6-2. The hosts also picked up gold in diving, fencing, pentathlon, shooting and athletics.
In other highlights, Somdev Devvarman scored a 6-1, 6-2 upset victory over top-seeded Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan for his second gold medal of the Games. Running for Bahrain, Ethiopian-born 1,500 meters world champion Maryam Jamal successfully defended her Asian Games title, while Kenyan-born defending 3,000-meter steeple chase champion Tareq Mubarak Taher captured gold running for Bahrain.
South Korea’s Jung Soon-Ok earned gold in the women’s long jump, while Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim earned the men’s high jump title. In men’s football, Japan will meet the United Arab Emirates in Thursday’s gold medal final after Japan edged Iran, 2-1 and the UAE shut out South Korea, 1-0 in the semifinals.
China now has a total of 329 medals, including 165 gold, 85 silver and 79 bronze. South Korea is in second place with 193 medals (64 gold, 55 silver and 74 bronze) while Japan is third with 158 (34 gold, 64 silver and 68 bronze).
