Baku-APA. At least 14 guards were taken hostage by prisoners in the Challapalca prison in southern Peru, local police and media sources said Wednesday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.
The incident occurred late Tuesday while prison guards were on a 48-hour nationwide strike to demand higher wages, reports said. There is yet no official confirmation about the exact number of prison guards held.
Police and troops have surrounded the maximum-security prison, which is located 4,000 meters above sea level, to prevent prisoners from escaping.
