US special envoy Steve Witkoff will visit Russia this week to continuing negotiating with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the White House said Tuesday, as President Donald Trump continues to push for an end to the war in Ukraine, APA reports citing CNN.
Last week, Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested they may soon abandon attempts to broker an end to the war if Moscow and Kyiv resisted their efforts.
But Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said Tuesday the negotiations were “hopefully moving in the right direction” and declined to say what “stepping back” from the peace efforts might look like.
“I think it would be unwise for me to broadcast that from this podium,” she said during a White House briefing. “Ultimately, that’s a decision for the president to make, but he’s made it very clear he wants to see peace.”
She said Trump had grown “frustrated” with both Russia and Ukraine as fighting persists.
“He wants to see this war end, and he wants to stop the killing on both sides of this war, and he’s been very clear about that for quite some time,” she said.
