US Special Representative for Ukraine Keith Kellogg says that after the ceasefire along the front line in Ukraine, Russia needs to return to the League of Nations and live with the results of the war in the long term, APA reports.
Kellogg said he spoke of a sense of confidence after learning about Kyiv and Moscow's vision for ending the war.
"We took the Ukrainian document, then the Russian one — they call it a memorandum... And we said: OK, how can you combine these two documents to reach the final state? And now we feel quite confident. We know what the final state can and should look like," he said.
Kellogg said that it is possible to win. "By winning, I mean the possibility of reaching a peace agreement," Kellogg said in Brussels during the German Marshall Fund forum.
When asked what the outcome might look like, Kellogg spoke of a comprehensive ceasefire.
"A ceasefire on the ground — that is, on the land where you are physically located," the US special envoy explains.
Kellogg said that then it would be possible to move on to returning children and prisoners, which would make the ceasefire long-term and sustainable not only for Ukrainians but also for Europe.
"Then - try to bring the Russians back to what I would call the League of Nations. So everyone works together... You can all live with the results of this in the long term," Kellogg said.
Kellogg separately noted the efforts of Volodymyr Zelenskyy and also focused on the challenges facing the Ukrainian leader. Kellogg said he brought this to the attention of the US president.
"I said, sir, we haven't had an American president since Abraham Lincoln who has had to do what President Zelenskyy has done. He is fighting a war for national survival on his own land... When you see this, you have to appreciate the problems they are facing on the ground right now. I think sometimes we don't see that," Kellogg said.
