Erdogan: West should either stand by terrorists or try to win Turkish people’s trust again

"There is no explanation for betraying Turkey’s friendship in a way that is contrary to our bilateral relations and fundamental values,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was quoted in an article published by The Guardian as saying, APA reported.

Erdogan said that a year has passed since the attempted military coup and Turkey stands for its democratic values.

"A year ago, millions of citizens, discarding political and cultural discrimination, demonstrated persistence against those who tried to change the Constitution, fired at innocent people and bombarded the parliament. The Turkish people, demonstrating unity, prevented the armed group from harming democracy, sovereignty and people's way of life. The prevention of that military coup is a turning point in the country’s democracy history,” he said.

The president stressed that western leaders should make a choice: to stand by terrorists or to try to win the Turkish people’s trust again.

"Western hypocrisy and double standards are too troubling to the Turkish people, who stood up for their freedom. Attempts by our government to hold responsible Fethullah Gülen and his followers who supported the military coup are important not only for Turkey, but also for the democrats all over the world,” he said.
