Peru destroys 4 tons of illicit drugs

Baku-APA. Peru on Thursday destroyed more than four tons of drugs under the supervision of Interior Minister Daniel Lozada and National Police (PNP) General Director Raul Salazar, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Officials incinerated a total of 4,156 kilos of drugs, including 1,992 kilos of cocaine paste, 1,307 kilos of cocaine hydrochloride and 857 kilos and 213 grams of marijuana, at the PNP’ s National Direction of Special

Operations, seven kilometers east of downtown Lima, the capital.

Lozada said 23 tons of drugs had been seized in different operations around the country since September 2011.

President Ollanta Humala has said one of his goals is to eradicate coca cultivation among farmers in favor of alternative plants.

According to the figures from the United Nations, coca is cultivated in 14 valleys in Peru covering 61,200 hectares, and about 90 percent of it ends up in the hands of drug traffickers, who produce about 320 tons of cocaine annually.

Noting Peru’s fight against drug trafficking, Lozada said officials had also seized 95 percent of the property and assets of a family

allegedly involved in money laundering, including some 50 million U.S. dollars paid by persons with ties to Sendero Luminoso, Peru’s guerrilla movement.

The rebels are suspected of providing drug traffickers with protection in exchange for money, arms and medicine in coca-growing regions of Peru.
