Truck attack in Manhattan kills 8; mayor calls it act of terror - UPDATED - 2

The suspect in the Manhattan truck attack, a 29-year-old man, crashed his truck and then was shot by police in the abdomen, New York Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill said. O’Neill said the suspect “did make a statement” after the crash, which led police to declare the incident an act of terrorism, APA repoirts quoting BBC.

Six people were declared dead at the scene and two were pronounced dead at the hospital, and 11 were transported to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to New York Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro.

Eight people are dead and about a dozen injured after the driver of a truck drove the wrong way down a well-trafficked bike path, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

“This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror,” he said.

As many as six people have been reported dead after a bizarre incident in which two truck drivers got in a fight, a truck drivers ran over cyclists and pedestrians, and one of the drivers opened fire, APA reports quoting BBC.

The suspect was shot by police officers after exiting the rental car holding "imitation firearms," was shot by police, and taken into custody alive, NYPD said via Twitter.

At least 15 people were injured, MSNBC reported. The rented Home Depot truck, pictured below, drove several blocks on a sidewalk, mowing down civilians. A school bus eventually got in the car's way to limit the destruction, according to an eyewitness.

The FBI has arrived on the scene to address the situation. The NYPD would usually have jurisdiction over a crime in New York but the FBI can overrule their jurisdiction depending on the nature of the crime.

At least one police officer was injured, emergency medics said.

A suspect has been arrested in New York after people were reportedly shot by the driver of a car, APA reports quoting BBC.

Police said they made the arrest after responding to "reports of shots fired" near the West Side Highway in Lower Manhattan.

They urged people to avoid the area as a major emergency services operation was under way.

Unconfirmed reports on social media suggest a man drove at cyclists in a cycling lane before opening fire.

The number of casualties is at present unknown.
