Baku. Elshen Mammadov - APA-Sport. “I am satisfied with Azeri athletes’ performances in Beijing Olympics. Most of them performed much beyond their strength”, Youth and Sports Deputy Minister Ismayil Ismayilov told APA-Sport.
The official stated that 22 out of 44 sportsmen that represented Azerbaijan in the 29th Games were ranked in top eight.
“Azeri athletes scored one gold, two silver and 4 bronze medals in Beijing. Besides, we achieved new success. Azerbaijani gymnasts qualified for individual and group competition final for the first time in our history. None of 5 weightlifters won medal though 4 of them were ranked in top ten. Nizami Pashayev could have scored Olympic medal if he didn’t suffer injury on leg”, he said.
Ismayilov noted that most athletes lacked luck in Beijing Games.
“Boxer Samir Mammadov had scored bronze medal in the world championship last year. He lost 1/8 round encounter to Thailand boxer who later became Olympic champion”, he said.
The official stated the ministry intends to use scientific methods to develop sports in the country. The wide-range plan includes sport schools in the regions, training courses for coaches in State Academy for Physical Training and Sports and abroad, as well as courses for sports doctors in Medical University, joint camps with qualified teams of foreign countries. Ismayilov believes the measures will help to gain more qualifying licenses to 2012 London Olympics.
“Azerbaijan was not represented in rowing, board tennis, hockey, volleyball, fencing and other games in Beijing. I think we will be able to join these contests in 2012 London Olympics. I believe we will gain higher results in the next Olympics”, he added.
