The State Security Service of Azerbaijan is consistently and systematically working with the concerned agencies to prevent extremist and radical tendencies in the country, said Suad Mahmudov, an official of the State Service.

He made the remarks Tuesday at a conference on the theme “Organization and importance of joint action in the fight against religious radicalism,” APA reports.

Over the past year, seven foreign-based religious communities were banned in Azerbaijan, said Mahmudov, noting that 12 foreign extremists were expelled from the country through the State Migration Service.

He emphasized that in conjunction with the State Border Service, 20 extremists who fought in foreign conflicts were handed over to investigative agencies upon return.

"The State Security Service today is consistently and systematically working with the concerned agencies to prevent extremist and radical tendencies in the country. It is one of the rights of government to address religious issues, not only from the point of view of human rights and national and spiritual values, but also from a security perspective,” he added.

Mahmudov stressed that although religion is separate from the state in Azerbaijan, the state is directly responsible for the religious situation in the country and the security of its citizens.
