Perceptible tremors are likely to occur in Azerbaijan, but a strong, destructive earthquake is not expected, said the director general of the Republic Seismic Survey Center of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Gurban Yetirmishli, told reporters in the country’s Zagatala district, APA reports.

A 6-magnitude earthquake struck Azerbaijan’s Zagatala district on June 5. No causalities were reported, several houses were slightly damaged.

The top seismologist said that today, together with Minister of Emergency Situations, Colonel General Kamaladdin Heydarov, they visited the quake-affected areas.

“We did not see any severe devastation. The existing cracks in old buildings and houses expanded. In some places, poor-quality fences collapsed,” he noted.

Yetirmishli stressed that there is a big difference between the 2012 earthquake and yesterday’s earthquake in Zagatala. “The earthquake in 2012 caused severe destruction in the district,” he said.

The magnitude of yesterday’s earthquake was 5.5, the top seismologist said, adding that about 100 aftershocks have been recorded so far.
