Azerbaijan's population has grown by 15 percent over the past 12 years, said Elnur Suleymanov, head of Employment Policy and Demography Department of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of Population.

He made the remarks on Thursday at a final conference of the project “Enlightening youth for the promotion of the values of female children in Azerbaijan,” APA reports.

According to Suleymanov, the number of births in Azerbaijan decreased from 17.5 percent to 14.7 percent per 1,000 people and the number of deaths increased from 6.2 percent to 6.6 percent.

“According to demographic statistics, there is an increase in boy births in Azerbaijan. There are 114 boys per 100 girls,” he said. “Changes in gender ratio affect the gender structure of the population. There were 1,051 women for every 1,000 men in 1989 and 1,021 women in the year 1999.”

The ministry official stressed that a possible increase in the number of men in Azerbaijan may lead to a disproportionate decrease in the female population.

“It is important to prepare an action plan and to carry out enlightenment measures in order to prevent the violation of sex ratio. A draft law “State Program on Population Situation and Demographic Development in the Republic of Azerbaijan” was prepared based on the “Azerbaijan 2020: Look into the Future” Concept of Development approved by the relevant decree of the president, and was submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers. Complex measures on protection of mothers and children are expected to be implemented in the period covered by the state program till 2030,” Suleymanov added.
