193 people—188 Azerbaijani nationals and 5 foreigners—were diagnosed with HIV in Azerbaijan in the first four months of 2018, Eldaniz Muradov, acting director of the Republican AIDS Center said on Friday, APA reports.

Of these 188 Azerbaijani citizens, 123 are men and 65 women, he noted.

"During this period, 46 Azerbaijani citizens developed AIDS, and 16 Azerbaijani citizens have been reported to have died of this infection,” Muradov said.

The acting director stressed that 23 Azerbaijani citizens have contracted this infection through parental contact, 89 through heterosexual contact, and 10 through homosexual contact.

“Two babies have acquired the infection from their mothers. How the remaining 64 people have been infected remains unclear,” he added.
