The Jewish community of Azerbaijan held an event in Baku on May 10 to celebrate Iyar 26, the Day of Salvation and Liberation from Nazism, APA reports.

The event was held at the Baku Jewish House.

Director of the Baku Jewish House Shaul Davidov said that the event was organized on the initiative of President of the International Charity Foundation German Rashbilovich Zakharyayev and with the consent of the Israeli state.

The director said that Jews bravely fought in the ranks of the Soviet army against the Nazis in the Great Patriotic War.

Israeli Ambassador to Azerbaijan Dan Stav also took part in the event.

What happened to Jews during the Second World War was the bloodiest period of history, the Israeli envoy emphasized.

Later, Rabbi Zamir Isayev recited prayers and lit candles to honor the memory of the victims.

Participants of the Great Patriotic War were presented money awards on the behalf of Zakharyayev.

Zakharyayev, who lives in Moscow at present, was born in the Krasnaya Sloboda (Red village) in Azerbaijan’s Guba district.
