“I would like to enquire about what the economic benefits there would be if the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict ended in peace,” Vice President of the European Parliament Heidi Hautala said in his speech on economic cooperation and energy issues at the 15th meeting of the EU-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Cooperation Committee in Baku, APA reported.

Hautala also asked whether or not Azerbaijan had a plan about renewable energy sources after the oil and gas era.

Deputy Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Valeh Alasgarov said that the social situation of the people living in Nagorno-Karabakh was once better than the people living in other parts of Azerbaijan and in Armenia.

"The Nagorno-Karabakh population would have been better off now had they not revolted against Azerbaijan. I’d like to make one more point; the election commission of the Nagorno-Karabakh puppet republic announced that there were 41,000 voters. Later, however, it was announced that a military drill was taking place with the participation of 44,000 personnel. How could this be possible,” he said.

Alasgarov noted that there are big players in the existing conflicts in the post-Soviet zone.

"What did the Nagorno-Karabakh, South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Donetsk conflicts grew out of? These conflicts were created so that these countries could not approach the European Union and other institutions. Can Georgia and Ukraine become members of the European Union while these conflicts exist?”
