People’s artist Tokay Mammadov dies aged 91

People’s artist, sculptor Tokay Mammadov died at age 91 in hospital this morning, APA reported.

Tokay Mammadov is the author of the statues to Mahammad Fuzuli, Nasimi, Uzeyir Hajibayov and Koroglu.

Tojay habib oglu Mammadov was born in Baku on July 18, 1927. His father, Habib, was doctor of technological sciences and his mother Zivar Mammadova was Azerbaijan’s first female sculptor. Tokay Mammadov received his primary education from his mother.

Tokay Mammadov entered Baku Technical School of Arts and in the third year, in 1945, he was accepted to sculpture faculty of Saint Petersburg State Academic Institute of Arts, Sculpture and Architecture named after Repin. He studied at such great masters as V.Senayskiy, A.Matveyev and M.Kerzin.

He was awarded the USSR State Prize in 1978, and the State Premium of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1982, as well as the orders of Honor, Friendship of Peoples, and Glory.
