The reconstruction of the Guba Genocide Memorial Complex is underway, academician Isa Habibbeyli, Vice-President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and a member of the commission on the Guba genocide memorial complex, said Monday, APA reports.

He noted that a number of important measures have been taken on the basis of the proposals made by the commission set up upon the order dated 5 June 2016 of the head of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan on investigation of the situation at the Guba Genocide Memorial Complex.

"First of all, I would like to note that some reconstructions have been carried out at the historic cemetery, where the bodies rest of those who were brutally massacred by Armenian aggressors and inhumanly mass buried. The human bones belonging to other nationalities, along with the Azerbaijanis, have been buried in accordance with national and religious traditions. The graves have been covered. Landscaping work is ongoing around the Guba cemetery," he said.

Habibbeyli also said that there is a plan to install a memorial plaque reflecting the bloody events of 1918 and to erect a symbolic monument in the area.

"Concerned organizations are working to prepare memorial plaques and symbolic monuments. This work is expected to be completed by early March. In the days of commemoration of the genocide of Azerbaijanis, the monument and the memorial plaque will be unveiled in an official ceremony. The ceremony will be attended by state officials, religious figures, as well as the general public,” the academician added.
