Azerbaijan enjoys close relations with European countries, and negotiations on a new agreement with the European Union started last year, said President of Azerbaijan.
The president made the remarks addressing the 6th congress of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party on Thursday, APA reports.
The EU member countries are Azerbaijan’s main trade partners and key investors, said President Aliyev, adding. “Our relations in the political, economic and energy spheres stand at a very high level. Cooperation with the EU member countries is of great importance for us as well.”
The head of state noted that Azerbaijan is on the way to modernization.
“We must develop and apply the most advanced standards in accordance with our national values. We rely on very strong national roots and this is essential for us. At the same time, we must always be open to the world, and bring to the country the most advanced technologies. Today, Azerbaijan demonstrates a principled position and pursues an independent policy that ensures the interests of the Azerbaijani people and opens up additional opportunities for many partners,” President Aliyev added.
