Armenians continue to destroy flora and fauna in occupied Azerbaijani lands – deputy minister

Armenians continue to destroy flora and fauna in the occupied Azerbaijani territories, Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Firdovsi Aliyev said on Wednesday.

He made the remarks at an event on the protection of forestry, co-organized by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), APA reports.

The deputy minister noted that about 261 thousand hectares of Azerbaijani forests are under occupation of Armenia.

He went on to say that the total forest area​​ in Azerbaijan is 1 million 21 thousand hectares (12 percent of the country’s territory).

Aliyev noted that over the past 16 years, about 159 ,000 hectares of forest have been restored in Azerbaijan.

The deputy minster said that over the reported period, 52,100 hectares of new forest areas were created and 106 million new trees were planted.

“Arid, non-fertile soils were brought to a useful condition. Above 5 million trees were planted in more than 4 thousand hectare area. Up to 1 million fruit trees have been planted in the country so far in more than 4,000 hectares of area,” he added.
