"The 'Names and Surnames' Commission under the Terminology Commission of the Cabinet of Ministers is receiving requests about the spelling of personal names and a range of bizarre names being given to children," Deputy Chairwoman of the Terminology Commission Sayali Sadigova told APA.

She said that ASAN service centers have received requests for the names "Toybəy" and "Arenda", which are unrelated to the Azerbaijani language.

"It is not allowed to give these names to children. There are also parents who insist on naming their children "Ali" and "Usub", rather than "Əli" and "Yusif", which are the only correct spellings. Our citizens should know this,” she noted.

Sadigova stressed that more religious names have been given boys in recent years and that requests for the names "Übeyd", "Üveys" have increased.

"Recently, they requested for the names 'Musab' and 'Ünalp'. The latter is a very interesting name. 'Ün' means 'voice' and 'alp' means courageous . This name basically means 'Voice of the courageous one'. The names 'Ünal', 'Tuqan', and 'Tuqay' have already been accepted. The name 'Tuqay' has two meanings, both 'military alliance' and 'dear',” she said.
