There are more than one million thalassemia carriers in Azerbaijan, the director of the Republican Thalassemia Center, Valeh Huseynov, has announced, APA reports.

He noted that the number of patients with thalassemia has soared in recent years due to an increase in the number of marriages between thalassemia carriers.

Huseynov said that 3,614 people with hereditary blood diseases are registered in Azerbaijan. “Of them, 3,105 are suffering from thalassemia,” he said.

The center director stressed that the introduction of compulsory pre-marital medical examination in Azerbaijan in 2015 led a significant drop in the number of children born with signs of thalassemia 2017.

About 1,000 people aged under 18 are registered as thalassemia patients in the Republican Thalassemia Center, according to the director.

Huseynov went on to say that 55 bone marrow transplantation operations have been performed at the Republican Thalassemia Center since 2013.

“Bone marrow transplantation is the only radical method for treating thalassemia. In our country, as in the whole world, there is a big problem with donors. This year, 10 patients will undergo bone marrow transplantation,” he said.
