The Balakan District Court on Friday continued the trial of imprisoned journalist Afgan Mukhtarli.

A public prosecutor who was given the floor during the trial sought 8 years for the journalist.

After consultation, the jury announced the verdict that sentenced Afgan Mukhtarli to 6 years in prison.

Azerbaijan’s Balakan district court resumed a trial in the case of journalist Afgan Mukhtarli who was detained on 29 May 2017 over an attempt to illegally cross the state border.

A state prosecutor made a speech at the trial, asking the court to sentence Mukhtarli to 8 years in prison, APA reports.

Mukhtarli was detained by officers of the State Border Service on May 29 last year in the territory of Balakan district while attempting to illegally cross the state border. At the time of his detention, Mukhtarli showed resistance. During the inspection, a large sum of money was found on him.

He is charged under Articles 318 (illegal border crossing), 206 (smuggling) and 315.2 (resistance or application of violence concerning the representative of authority) of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan.
