3,000 people granted Georgian citizenship in 2017

In January-October 2017, 3,000 people were granted Georgian citizenship by a relevant order of the country’s president, reads a report from Georgia’s Ministry of Justice.

According to the report, during the reporting period 3,097 people – 2,363 of them are Georgian citizens – appealed to Georgia’s president with the request to obtain Georgian citizenship.

Among those who obtained Georgian citizenship are 79 ethnic Georgians living in Iran, says the report. Seventy out of 97 people who failed to receive Georgian citizenship were born in Georgia, 27 others are former Georgian citizens or family members of Georgian citizens.

The report further says that in 2013-2017 a relevant commission considered requests from 544 people to obtain Georgian citizenship in a simplified form. The requests of 508 were positively responded and submitted to the country’s president. Of them, 55 were born in Georgia, 299 in Azerbaijan, 145 in Uzbekistan and 9 in other countries.
