Several Azerbaijani human rights defenders have appealed to President Ilham Aliyev

The appeal reads as follows:


”Dear Mr. President,


Under difficult geopolitically circumstances the work you have done to strengthen the Azerbaijani state has made a great contribution to civil peace but there are many issues to be resolved in the field of human rights that we feel in dept to bring to your attention.


The 70th anniversary of Eleanor Roosevelt’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights will be celebrated with worldwide. Naturally, as a part of the civil world, Azerbaijan, which values human rights and freedoms,will not be left out. We hope that You, adhering to the years-long tradition, will issue a decree on freeing many prisoners.


We appeal to you on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and ask You to release prisoners who are a subject of discussions between Baku and international organizations. Such humane step from you would be a great gift for human rights defenders and serve to create civil peace in society on the eve of December 31 - World Solidarity Day of Azerbaijanis,” says the letter.


The letter of appeal was signed by Chairperson of the Society for Protection of Women Rights named after Dilara Aliyeva, Novella Jafaroglu, Chairperson of the Public Union for Human Rights and Rule of Law, Saida Gojamanli, Chairperson of the Azerbaijani national branch of the International Society for Human Rights, Saadat Bananyarli, member of the Human Rights Center of Azerbaijan, Zaliha Tahirova, Chairperson of the Oil Worker's Rights Protection Organization, Mirvari Gahramanli, Chairperson of the Azerbaijan National Committee of Helsinki Citizens Assembly, Arzu Abdullayeva and Chairman of Human Rights Research Center, Avaz Hasanov.
