NIDA member gets jail sentence reduced

Azerbaijan’s Supreme Court on Wednesday considered an appeal filed by NIDA civic movement member Elgiz Gahraman, who was sentenced to five years and a half in prison on January 16, 2017.

The court reclassified the charges on Article â„–234.4.3 (illegal manufacturing, purchase, storage, transportation, transfer or selling of narcotics, psychotropic substances in large amount) into 234.1 (illegal purchase or storage without a purpose of selling of narcotics or psychotropic substances in a quantity (amount) exceeding necessary for personal consumption) and reduced Elgiz Gahraman’s jail sentence to three years.

Gahraman was detained on 12 August 2016 on charges of illegal manufacturing, purchase, storage, transportation, transfer or selling of narcotics, psychotropic substances. On January 16, 2017, the Baku Court of Grave Crimes passed a verdict, sentencing the NIDA member to five years and a half in prison.

On May 18, the Court of Appeal upheld the sentence.
