There are some forces in Azerbaijan who seek to bring political elements into Ashura commemorations in the country, said Gunduz Ismayilov, deputy chairman of the Azerbaijani State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations.

He made the remarks at a conference on the theme “Religion-Media Relations: Current Situation and International Experience”, jointly organized by the State Committee, the Press Council and the Caucasian Muslims Office in Guba district on Monday, APA’s north bureau reports.

Ismayilov said that today there are threats in the religious sphere.

“For example, there has been a tendency in Azerbaijan in recent yeas for Ashura commemorations to be held in ways similar to those of other countries. Ashura commemorations have been held in Azerbaijan throughout history and will continue to be held. It is a pity, however, that some religious groups and authorities seek to hold Ashura commemorations in Azerbaijan in ways identical to traditions of other peoples,” he said.

The committee official stressed that there have never been political elements in Ashura commemorations in Azerbaijan.

“However, today there are some forces in Azerbaijan who seek to bring such elements to Ashura commemorations,” he added.

He noted that there other threats in the religious sphere. Ismayilov underlined that there are some people who want to confront national and religious affiliation of the Azerbaijani people.
