It is apparent for the European Union (EU) that Russia plays a key role in relations with the EU Eastern Partnership (EaP) countries, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at the official opening of the EaP summit in Brussels on Friday, APA reports.

Underlining the importance of the Eastern Partnership, Merkel said that one of the main points is the improvement of people’s living standards, the development of democracy, as well as security issues.

“I’m very happy that we have already signed the EU Association Agreement with Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine,” said Merkel. “Now, we will sign a partnership agreement similarly with Armenia and Azerbaijan. It will not be as intensive as the Association Agreement, but we will cooperate with them.”

“It’s clear to us that Russia plays a key role in relations with these countries. For that reason, I hope that we will realize, at today’s discourse, what the domestic political situation is in those countries,” added Merkel.
