A state program is being developed to repatriate Azerbaijani citizens in Iraq and Syria, Sayyad Salahli, first deputy chairman of the State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations, told APA.

Salahli said that this is a global issue, and no government body can resolve it separately.

“The first step has already been taken in this direction, and one child was returned from Iraq to Azerbaijan,” he said underscoring the need for serious investigation of this process at the interstate level and solution of these problems.

“For example, how many days did it take to bring world-renowned scientist Lotfi Zadeh’s body to Azerbaijan, even despite his official will? That is, the return to Azerbaijan of someone from another country is a very serious and complicated process. A serious investigation must be carried out on each individual, and steps must be taken as soon as appropriate agreements were reached. Azerbaijan has work out a state program, and work is underway in this direction. We will find out how our citizens were taken to Iraq, Syria, how they were deceived and so on. For the time being, we are making very serious efforts to bring our citizens back to Azerbaijan,” added Salahli.
