Had the West and the whole world taken a fair approach to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and had the conflict been resolved in time, most of the conflicts in the world perhaps would not exist today, Novruz Mammadov, assistant to Azerbaijan’s president for foreign policy issues, head of department, said on Monday, APA reported.
Mammadov noted that in the early 1990s there were conflicts in 10 countries, while now conflicts exist in 50 countries.
"These conflicts have not emerged in the wake of the actions of small states. These came about especially as a result of the policies pursued by Western states,” he stressed.
According to the top official, it is now the same boomerang that is coming back to Europe, where there are a number of problems that may well give rise to separatism.
“Today they are faced with these problems because they once did not hold a fair position against separatism and instead supported it overtly and covertly. We had urged the countries now faced with separatism to state their stance against separatism. And now those same countries want us to express our position on separatism,” he added.
Mammadov underlined that Azerbaijan is against separatism in Spain.
“Recently, two regions of Italy wanted economic independence. This may be the first step. The UK has such problems in connection with Northern Ireland, Scotland. If instead of submitting to geopolitical interests they would have demonstrated fair principles, there would not be such phenomena today. Therefore, it is difficult to accurately predict the processes in Europe and the world. Unfortunately, such situation exists today,” added the top official.
