Armenian businessman Levon Hayrapetyan, who was considered one of the main figures sponsoring the separatist regime created in the Armenian-occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan, has died aged 68, APA reported citing Armenian media.

Hayrapetyan will be buried in Moscow.

Hayrapetyan spent the last years of his life in prosecutions. He was sentenced to four years in prison in Moscow, on charges of extorting $700 thousand from the mother of a Russian former senator. But because of health problems, his prison sentence was later commuted to house arrest.

He was also accused of involvement in the illicit sale of shares owned by Bashneft, a leading Russia-based oil company.

Hayrapetyan was one of the richest activists of the Armenian Diaspora throughout the world.
