Premarital examination: 240 diagnosed with thalassemia, 7 with AIDS in Azerbaijan

Some 8,843 people underwent premarital medical examination in Azerbaijan in September 2017, Zohra Alimirzayeva, the director of the Scientific Research Institute of Hematology and Transfusion named after B. Eyvazov, told APA.

Of them, 240 people are diagnosed with thalassemia, 26 with syphilis and 7 with AIDS, noted Alimirzayeva.

She went on to say that as of July 2017, a total of 333,401 people underwent premarital examination in Azerbaijan.

“Of them, 23,352 people were diagnosed with thalassemia. Some 1,262 people were diagnosed with syphilis and 247 people with AIDS. 122 couples were diagnosed with thalassemia trait,” Alimirzayeva said.

She added that 105,107 people passed examination in first nine months of 2017. “Some 32 couples, as well as 13,169 people were diagnosed with thalassemia trait, 378 people were diagnosed with syphilis and 84 with AIDS,” said the institute director.
